Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving web site traffic from search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing via natural methods as opposed to PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns. The higher a website ranks in the search engines, the more traffic it will receive. This is particularly good for online retailers who are starting to see the benefits of SEO as opposed to traditional paid advertising.

SEO strategies include on-site optimization which is all down to content Ė keeping it fresh and relevant and also focusing on keywords within the content. Meta tags are useful, though not as important as they once were. Title tags containing keywords and a domain names containing keywords help too.

Another part of a successful SEO campaign is about creating back-links to your site. This is a good example of where quality is really more important than quantity and one should aim to build relevant back-links with the highest Google Page Rank possible and avoid things like "link farms".

SEO can be carried out by individuals and webmasters or it can be outsourced to an SEO agency - there are advantages in both options. The thing you have to remember is that SEO takes time - you donít want useless content on your site for the sake of it. In our opinion, you should not let SEO ruin the feel or presence of your site - create relevant content regularly, take time to build quality back-links and then let the search engines come and find your site!
